About Gamma Knife > How It Works
How The Gamma Knife Works
With pinpoint precision and typically a single treatment, the Gamma Knife destroys, arrests or shrinks the abnormalities. The Gamma Knife, which contains no blade and makes no incision, is a sophisticated instrument exclusively designed for this purpose.
Gamma Knife target areas are pinpointed with three-dimensional computer imaging.Combining data from three-dimensional computer imaging studies with a stereotactic headframe that focuses radiation, the Gamma Knife can destroy, arrest or reduce tumors, cause lesions to deteriorate, and close AVMs, and with Trigeminal Neuralgia it alters the conducting pain fibers.

The Gamma Knife Bed slides into the shielded sphere containing the radiation sources.Upon fitting the patient with the stereotactic frame, which serves as a measuring guide, the frame's external axis are used to determine coordinates for targeting the abnormality. State-of-science computer technology enables the neurosurgeon, radiation oncologist, radiation physicist, and technicians to tailor radiation dose distribution to conform specifically to the lesion volume.

Gamma KnifeA collimator helmet containing 201 evenly distributed portals is attached to the frame and the patient is introduced headfirst into the heavily shielded, 18-ton Gamma Knife cavity, where the 201 sources of cobalt-60 are positioned to converge on a single target with pinpoint accuracy. The single high dose of precisely focused radiation targets the lesion, sparing the surrounding healthy tissue.
